Tiarella cordifolia – Foamflower – Saxifragaceae (eastern North America)
Habit: Dense carpets of leaves developing into dense, extended, mats that keep their shape well with creeping layers; fast-growing.
Size: Carpet of leaves 5-15 cm, inflorescences 20-25 cm high.
Flowers: Small, little stars, white with hints of pink, in loose, upright racemes; May to June.
Leaves: Decid to semi-evergreen, evergreen in mild climates, broadly cordate, mild green; bronze-red in autumn, brick-red in late winter.
Demands: Light shade to shade, likes cool, humid areas, frost hardy.
Soil: Continually fresh to moist, very sensitive to drought and heat; only humic substrates, acidic to neutral; do not rake out autumn leaves from trees.
