Sasa palmata nebulosa (Japan)
Habit: Dense, upright to overhanging; 2-2.5 m, building many runners.
Leaves: Evergreen; large and broad leaves, up to 30 cm long, dark green, ornamental markings.
Culms: Green, turning black with age, very flexible, upright or slightly arching, leaves palm-like arranged.
Roots: Shallow, many deep growing stolons, tolerates root pressure; invasive, rhizome barrier necessary as rhizomes and shoots will overrun other plantings.
Demands: Sun to semi-shade, tolerates shade and warmth, vigorous growth in cool, humid spots; frost hardy up to -20°C; needs protection from wind, winter sun and east wind.
Soil: Fresh to moist, all nutritious soils.
Our advice: Young shoots edible.
