Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’
Habit: Large shrub or small tree, 5-7 m tall, 3-5 m wide, initially conical, later broadly round to overhanging, slow-growing, 20-30 cm a year.
Flowers: Before or during shooting, lively pink, April.
Fruits: Juicy, tart, large, dark red plums.
Leaves: Early shoots, elliptical, saturated dark red to black-red, intense colours, not turning pale.
Roots: Shallow, no runners, sensitive to soil compaction.
Demands: Sunny to slightly shady, likes warmth, usually frost hardy; good for urban areas, sensitive to wind.
Soil: Moderately dry to moist, nutritious, alkaline loam.
