Habit: Impressive, widespread clumps; culms 6-8 (12), usually 5-10 m wide or even wider, thicket-like, initially upright, then wide and gracefully arching, very fast-growing.
Leaves: Evergreen, lanceolate, shiny light to fresh green on the above, blue-green beneath.
Culms: Flat dark green, turning yellow green with age; picturesquely arching under the load of leaves.
Roots: Wide spreading rhizomes up to 6 m, numerous shoots.
Demands: Sun to light shade, will turn to light, likes warmth, usually frost hardy up to -23°C, protection from winter sun recommended.
Soil: Fresh to moist, slightly acidic to alkaline, all well-drained, nutritious substrates.
