Mahonia media ‘Winter Sun’
(= M. japonica x M. lomarifolia)
Habit: Bizarre normal shrub, 1-1.5 m tall, upright growth, few branches, slow-growing.
Flowers: Loosely ramified, 20-30 cm long and primrose-yellow racemes, January to April, scented, flowers sensitive to late frost.
Fruits: Blue-pruinose berries.
Leaves: Evergreen, narrow ovate, leathery, pinnate, up to 30 cm long, thorny, grey-green.
Roots: Cordate, tolerating pressure on the roots.
Demands: Light shade to shade, needs protection from winter sun, more sensitive to frost than M. balei, winter protection recommended.
Soil: Fresh to damp, nutritious, each garden soil.
Hardiness: Zone 7b.
