Magnolia kobus (Japan)
Habit: Conical small tree, 8-10 m tall, 4-6 m wide; often with short stem, branches stiffly upright, twigs horizontal to vertically ascending.
Flowers: Before leaves shoot, plentiful with radiant white, wide-open flower stars, some 10 cm long, April, slightly fragrant, flowers only after the 15th year fully.
Fruits: Cylindrical, red syncarpy.
Leaves: Early shoots at end of April, fresh green, reverse ovoid; pale yellow in September.
Demands: Frost hardy
Soil: Also tolerates alkaline loam.
