Corylus spicata (Japan)
Habit: Normal shrub, 2 (3) m tall and wide; upright to asymmetrical habit, broader than tall when old; slow-growing.
Flowers: Light yellow before leaves shoot with many pleasantly fragrant flower spikes, some 3-4 cm long, April.
Leaves: Broadly cordate, crimson shoots, later dark to bluish green, notable yellow to orange-yellow in October.
Demands: Light shade; for protected areas as the early flowers are somewhat sensitive to late frost and wind; avoids heat and drought.
Soil: Moist to fresh organic soil, slightly acidic to neutral, sandy-humic.
