Corylopsis pauciflora (Japan)
Habit: Small shrub with fine twigs that reaches up, 1.2-1.5 m tall and 2 m wide; slow-growing.
Flowers: Many primrose bell flowers before leaves shoot; soft and pleasant smelling; depending on spring weather, in (February) March-April, flower some 2 weeks; gracious early spring flowers.
Leaves: Small, cordate, bronze shoots beginning of May, then light or medium green, pretty yellow from October on.
Roots: Flat, sensitive to soil compaction.
Demands: Lightly shady area, somewhat protected as flowers are sensitive to late frost, otherwise frost hardy, sensitive to full sunlight, heat and drought, needs wind protection.
Soil: well drained, organic soil, acidic to neutral, fresh to moist.
Note: Should be planted as large shrubs as they rarely flower when young.
