Clethra alnifolia – Sweet Pepper Bush (eastern North America)
Habit: Small to normal shrub, 1-5-3 m tall, some 2 m wide; initially upright, later arching, slow-growing.
Flowers: White, flat panicles like brushes, clear scent of vanilla, from July to September; gracious summer flowers.
Leaves: Oval, deep green, late shoots; staying green a long time in autumn, only pale yellow from mid-October.
Demands: Sun to light shade, very loose in deep shade, few flowers; frost hardy; wind resistant.
Soil: Damp to moist; growing easily on acidic, humic soil.
Hardiness: Zone 6b
