Habit: A colourful medium-size tree, 12-15 (20) m tall, 6-8 (10) m wide; conical crown, branches rising, twigs horizontal; fast-growing, 50-80 (100) cm a year.
Flowers: Monoecious, pretty, inconspicuous male catkins, ca. 10 cm, reddish yellow, in clusters of 4, opening in early spring (February-March); notable for its flowers in early spring.
Fruits: Decorative cones, usually in fours.
Leaves: Lanceolate to ovoid, pointed, leathery; violet-crimson when shooting, keep their colours; dark pale green in summer; late autumn colours, violet-red, November.
Demands: Sunny to lightly shady, tolerates warmth, frost hardy; tolerates urban environments, resistant to wind.
Soil: Moderately dry to fresh; slightly acidic to alkaline; loamy substrates.
