Kiwifruit, Chinese Gooseberry
(=A. deliciosa) – China, eastern Asia, Southern China
Habit – Twining, 8-10 m tall, sometimes taller, fast-growing 80-120 cm per year.
Flowers – Yellow-white, usually dioecious, in June.
Fruits – Elongated, ovoid, up to 5 cm, berries, green-yellow to brown, good taste.
Leaves – Very large, roand or elliptical, green, yellow to brown-red in autumn.
Bark – Young bark and branches hairy with red bristles.
Roots – Shallow
Demands – Sun to semi-shade, tolerant of heat, otherwise warm; frost hardy, prefers high humididty.
Soil – Dry to moist; slightly acidic to alkaline, sandy-loamy substrates should be poor or plant will grow too fast and lose its frost hardiness.
